The Rice Drying Yard (tiū-tiânn) — Ceramics Exhibition by Shui-Yin Design

The Rice Drying Yard (tiū-tiânn) — Ceramics Exhibition by Shui-Yin Design

Under the scorching sun, the farmers dry rice in the yard. There you can relax in the cool place by the brick wall.

On a breezy autumn night, the kids play in the yard, while their grandparents enjoy the sights of their company.

With the spring breeze, the rain drops knock on the bricks and tiles, and later fall in the center of the yard.

The yard in the three-section compound used to be a lively place. It was where farmers would bring in their harvest, the mother would hang the family’s laundry, and where the children would play around. It was the space for the celebration of daily festivals, full of interactions between families and neighbors. Nowadays, the yard is empty, it is no longer in use, and the children have lost the imagination of this space. As time went by, people left. The yard in the three-section compound seemed to be locked in loneliness.

The exhibition aims to reconstruct the site and transform it with the installation using bamboos as the supporting structure and pieces of white porcelain tiles as the body. The constructed space draws people in and allows their thoughts to wander in it. Through the experience, visitors can reflect on their own senses and memories and reconnect them with the spatio-temporal relationship to explore the possibility of conversation with the space.

No matter where you are from, a city, a town or a rural village, you are welcomed to take a quiet walk around to touch the straw or sit down to contemplate in the space. The collective memories of the people will help the yard to leave a record of its own in the company of light.
