Butterflies in flight

Italian artist Antonella Cimatti created Butterflies in flight during her two-month residency at the yingge ceramics museum. this wall installation of paper-clay butterflies mounted on colored plexiglas is located in the museum’s ticket office, and can also be viewed from the street.

Cimatti’s artistic research focuses on the illusory and ephemeral qualities of ceramics. in this work, one wing of each butterfly is crafted from porcelain and plexiglas, while the other is generated only by its shadow, cast by side lighting. the interplay of light and material emphasizes both the tangible and the fleeting.

In mythology, the butterfly symbolizes the soul, lightness, and the vital spirit; it is also a metaphor for fragility, beauty, impermanence, and joy. Shadows, elusive yet expressive, reveal an emotional and metamorphic world.

As a ceramic artist, cimatti has developed her own personal techniques, working extensively with porcelain and paper clay. The butterflies are shaped using a slip-filled syringe, while the flowers were created by applying paper clay onto fallen frangipani blossoms found daily in yingge, then fired — capturing their delicate form forever in clay.

Working process:

during her residency, the artist mixed porcelain with paper fibers using a mixer, then shaped the butterflies by extruding slip through a syringe. this technique gives the butterflies a delicate, lightweight appearance, highlighting the experimental and innovative potential of paper clay in contemporary ceramics.
