Decorative Techniques and Painting in Ceramic Art: By LAM Fat Kun and WANG Hsuan Wen

Decorative Techniques and Painting in Ceramic Art: By LAM Fat Kun and WANG Hsuan Wen

Ceramics are a defining feature of Yingge, Taiwan. Shaped with clay and enriched through color, ceramic works emerge in a wide range of styles and aesthetics.

After the ceramic works are fired, we paint onto their glazed surfaces. With precious materials such as gold, we conceive the final stage of their artistic creation, allowing the pure, understated white porcelain to reveal refined visual beauty through varied tones of color. We thus imbue these works with compelling narratives by way of our painterly subjects. Known as “overglaze”, this technique has a history spanning over three centuries across Eastern and Western traditions.

The works presented in this exhibition employ the ancient Eastern technique of overglaze to depict images drawn from Western art traditions. We hope for this exhibition to bring broader understanding and appreciation to those who love ceramic art.
