Born in Yingge, Taiwan's ceramics town, Wu Ming-Yi is the 24th-generation descendant of Wu family since moving to Taiwan. Not only has he inherited a rich heritage of ceramic craftsmanship from his family, but he has also honed his own artistic techniques and earning numerous accolades throughout his career. In 2010, Wu Ming-Yi was honored as “Taiwan Crafts Workshop”. His latest exhibition, Non-Doing (Wu Wei): The Ceramic Journey of Wu Ming-Yi, is the second installment in the “Taiwan Crafts Workshop ” series of exhibitions, held at the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum. The title “Non-Doing (Wu Wei)” embodies the philosophy of not violating the nature of things, following the laws of things, and creating in harmony with the way things go.
Wu Ming-Yi divides his artistic journey into six periods: Glaze Research (1991–1999), Integration of Glaze and Art (1997–1998), Wood-Fired Ceramics Research(1998–2015), Water-Flow/Landscaping Ceramics Innovative Patented Designs(2000–2004), The Road of Tea Ceramics (2011–2024) and The Road of Coffee Ceramics (2019–2021). These periods often overlap, illustrating his dynamic creativity and his ability to navigate between artistic innovation and practical functionality.
Overviewing the ceramic journey of Wu Ming-Yi, while the family ceramics industry laid the foundation for his skill, he did not rest on this heritage. Instead, he keeps on pursuing his own path as a ceramic artist. This exhibition will present 33 sets of works spanning his various creative periods, offering visitors a comprehensive view of his artistic journey.
